"Excalibur" |
Saco, Maine |
Completed
in June 1998, Excalibur is Maine's first wooden coaster in well over 50 years. It was
built by Custom Coasters Inc. of Ohio. It has a height of 108 feet and a drop of 84 feet.
One train was built by the Philadelphia Toboggan Company in Lansdale, PA. It holds
24 people and travels at speeds of around 62 miles per hour. The length of the ride is
2,750 feet, which takes an average of one minute and forty-six seconds to make your way
around the track.

This is the new Excalibur coaster located just southwest of Portland in
Saco, Maine.
I first visited last summer, when the coaster was under construction,
and was unable to ride since it was not all the way finished. Over a year later on
Labor Day weekend, I finally made it back to Maine to ride the Excalibur...and ride it I
did. That is a great piece of work there, let me tell you. I had a traveling
compadre this time, so we both went on for a total of about 22 laps. That is a sweet ride.
There's nothing like a wood coaster in the woods.
It had been many years since I was able to walk around in
Portland, and I was glad to be back. My buddy Pam and I went exploring the area, and ended
up going on a tour of the Henry Longfellow house on Congress Street in downtown Portland.
Sounds boring, right? Well, I must say, I would have thought so also, but I actually
liked the tour, museum and the special film that they showed us. We also hung out at both
the eastern and western promenades a bit, made our way down to see a light house or two,
and did some shopping. Maine is such a cool place. You would like it there. |
